RIDLE is a resilient image codec
RIDLE is a bespoke image codec incorporating the highest levels of resilience, ensuring that either a single image or a video stream of images can be robustly encoded and subsequently decoded even when the bitstream suffers serious corruption during transmission.
Compression is a key component in the transmission of critical information using wireless communication networks; any codec that operates in extreme and hostile environments must guarantee operation through resilience, whilst still providing high compression ratios and low latency. Current codecs, such as JPEG, H.264, HEVC and VVC, are designed for multimedia applications – maximizing image quality and compression ratios without significant resilience to transmission errors. No current codec is suitable for mission critical applications.
